About Cambridge AS & A Level

Cambridge AS & A Level are post-16 qualifications that serve as the primary university entrance route for students at British-curriculum schools globally. AS Level is typically completed in one year (Grade 12); full A Level across two years (Grades 12–13). A Level results directly determine university offers from UK, US, Australian, Canadian and other international universities.

Grade range: Grade 12–13 (Year 12–13), Ages 16–19

Boards: Cambridge (CAIE), Edexcel, AQA, OCR

Exam sessions: May–June each year (main session); some boards offer January resits

Subjects We Cover

From IGCSE to A Level — The Post-16 Progression

A Level builds directly on IGCSE foundations. Subject choice, grade requirements and workload increase significantly. Most students take 3–4 A Level subjects.

IGCSE (Grade 10–11) — Foundation

Strong IGCSE grades (A*/A in the subject) are the standard entry requirement for A Level. Students who struggle at IGCSE typically need additional support before attempting A Level in that subject.

AS Level (Grade 12 | Age 16–17)

First year of post-16 study. Some boards allow AS Level as a standalone qualification; others treat it as the first half of the full A Level. Examination sessions in May–June. Core concepts established at this stage are built upon heavily in the A2 year.

A2 / Full A Level (Grade 13 | Age 17–19)

Second and final year. Examinations in May–June. University offers are typically conditional on A Level grades. Subjects like Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics require continuous practice and past paper work throughout the year.
